Do you need toe fungus treatment?

My name is Ellen and I started writing about toe fungus treatment because I learned first hand the trouble that in can cause. It started when I occasionally wondered why my toe hurt. When I finally looked at it I didn’t want to get anywhere near it.

How To Find the Best Toe Fungus Treatment

Most people like to have pretty nails. Especially in the summer when the sandals and flip-flops come out and people can wiggle there toes in the sunlight.  As a woman, I enjoy to paint them all nice and pretty and my little girl gets joy out of this too. And I know how much my husband enjoys wearing his sandals in the sunshine.  Some men I know even get pedicures too. However, maybe you’re one of the 2%-18% of people worldwide who suffer from toenail fungus. This might not make you feel so proud to show off your toenails with fungus around them. Most people would not blame you. It’s definitely not something they want to look at either. Fortunately, there are treatments out there that can help with this terrible problem. So there will be no need for you to be embarrassed any longer.

Fingernails and toenails are both susceptible to fungus. It’s not an uncommon problem. However, toenails tend to become infected more often because fungus is a living organism that thrives in the dark and damp environments. There’s no better damp environment than under your nails. And since toenails are more often in the dark or may be damp more than fingernails, then it’s more common for them to become infected.

The infected toenails can be brownish or yellowish in color…

This is when you’ll need the toe fungus treatment!

toe fungus treatmentAlthough if your toenail is brownish or yellowish then it’s considered a more severe condition. Hopefully this isn’t the case. But when there is fungus on the nails then they tend to thicken over time or even become brittle causing them to shed or have crumbling edges. It’s an unsightly situation. At times toenail fungus may be painful, as well. An abundance of something called keratinous debris is commonly found under the edge of the nail that is infected. And a toenail is the perfect place for fungus to breed because it offers a protective covering.

Some people are more apt to develop toenail fungus than others. Also, the symptoms may be more severe in other people. Factors that come into play are abnormal pH level of the skin or trauma to the nail.

It’s also a good idea to clean your feet and toenails because poor hygiene of your feet can cause fungus. People may also may have a decreased immunity when they get toenail fungus to try to avoid stress and take your vitamin C!

If you think that you’re feet are weird for getting a fungus, think again! This fungus on the foot is the most common problem that foot specialists treat every year. There are a lot of common reason why you might be toe fungus. If you want to help protect yourself or your children from others, check out my post on prevention of toe fungus.

One suggestion on something you can do to help with your toes is to file the toenail really thin. That way a local treatment will absorb into the nail more effectively. And, oddly, reducing your sugar intake may decrease your body’s chance of hosting fungi.

Of course, prevention is the key to avoiding toenail fungus, but if you do find yourself with this toe fungus problem then there are treatments available.

Firstly, you have to be patient. It could take weeks or months for any treatment to work properly. Most often it takes unto 6 months.

Your doctor may prescribe oral anti-fungal medications for toe fungus treatment. The most effective ones are Lamisil and Sporanox. What these medications do is allow a new nail to grow in without infection. It slowly replaces the infected part of your nail. These drugs do have some side effects including skin rashes or liver damage, but this is very rare.

Other treatment options include antifungal lacquer, topical medications, or even surgery.

The antifungal nail polish is something you brush over the nail. This medication is called Penlac. You apply it once a day to the surrounding skin. After 7 days  you wipe off the piled layers with alcohol.

Topical medications that contain urea can be prescribed, as well. Urea helps to speed up absorption. Although, these medications for toe fungus  treatment don’t cure you completely but they can be helpful when used with an oral medication.

And in extreme cases where the infection is causing a lot of pain or is severe your doctor may want to remove your toenail. A new nail will slowly grow back in its place.

Don’t let the idea of toe fungus treatment become to great for you. It take little steps every day to get better. Keep your feet clean and dry, take the medication as directed, and take care of yourself and in time you’ll have those twinkle toes back!
